Looking forward to the new season, especially with three engine manufacturers and the new Dallara. Barrichello also makes it interesting and I hope he can take the challenge to the usual suspects....
I like the look of the new cars from most angles. They seemed racy. The broadcast needs to focus more on which engines are in which car.
I know that IndyCar needed to get it out of their system but the Dan Wheldon sobbing went on too long. A straightaway and the car named after him. His wife was paraded out there. His sister waved the flag. I think every racer in the history of IndyCar eulogized him. I liked Dan. His death was tragic but that was not the place for it.
I was really enjoying my Sunday afternoon. Beer in hand, I watched the first race of the season on DVR delayed by about 90 minutes. We had beautiful warm weather so the windows were open. It was like summer. Then the DVR recording stopped on time - WITH 4 LAPS LEFT!
Ah yes! Had to be reminded myself: "Tape the race AND tape the show immediately following the race, if I want to see the END of the race". Always need that little reminder at the beginning of each season, but only have to forget once, and then it is burned back in my brain for the rest of the year! Luckily for me, I had woken up and started watching the F1 race live. With the rain delay, I could see that I clearly didn't have enough tape reserved, so I immediately set up the show after the show after the race - good thing I did, or I never would have gotten to see my guy on the top step! :) That's the thing though, you never quite know how many shows after the race to include in the taping!
Nothing changed in the last four laps apart from Andretti slipping down the order :-)
It was a pretty decent race. The new package is so much better – especially the engine. The car now actually has some power out of the slow turns!
Full agree regarding Wheldon. He should be honoured and remembered, but they also need to remember that he is not the only driver to lose his life doing what he loved… Renna never gets a mention and he was just about to get his big break.

All in all, a good start to the season for IndyCar though!
Is that Road Atlanta? If so, then yes...it is an excellent track and what the cars of truly capable of, will come to light. (IMO) :)
I think that IndyCar would have gotten a LOT of flack from the fans if they had ignored Dan, but I think they struggled with the right balance, and erred on the side of "overboard" for sure. However, having said that, though Renna may have been an up and coming driver, he wasn't a former series champion, nor a double Indy 500 winner. Those accomplishments set Dan up a little higher on the recognition list I think. It was the same when Ratzenburg was killed and then Senna the next day. Nobody talked about Ratzenburg's death with anywhere near the same media frenzy as Senna - he was mentioned almost as an afterthought. Sad, but that's just the way it was.
Anyway....I'll hold off my vote of confidence in IndyCar's 2012 season for a couple of more races and see how it shakes out. The one thing I'm really struggling with is how does a series get better by reducing the size of its engines? Next thing we know they'll all be running 4 cylinder Mazda's.
Yeah it is a shame. Like Gonzalo RodrÃguez too. Shame it is the nature of it.
So far I'm still underwhelmed by Indycar. Not a fan of the new car's rear end, not a fan that the car is heavy and understeery, not a fan that they all look the same. Am a fan of the new engines though.
Granted all I have seen is a 12 minute highlight reel, so can't comment on the racing.
Boring !!

ReplyDeleteI am really excited about the new cars and the new season.
ReplyDeleteF1, Sebring, now IndyCar - It's March Madness!
Well....not exactly what I'd hoped for - seemed a bit of a procession most of the time. Just me? Or was this a rather boring race?
ReplyDeleteIt was a street race. Those tend to be parades.

I'll get the whole race next time.

Yes. There are too many to name.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is that there is another race this weekend - although for the life of me, I can't remember if the Alabama track is any good...
